Is genderless fashion really becoming a new trend? EXO’s Kai, BTS’s Jimin, Astro’s Moonbin & Sanha, TXT members, and various Kpop are seen wearing it at some point. So, what do people think?
The boundaries between women’s and men’s fashion are blurring.
Regardless of gender, women wore men’s fashion, and it has been evolving. So, more and more men are now challenging women’s clothing items such as crop tops and mini skirts.
As the appearances worn by fashion-conscious celebrities, including BTS, spread, attention is focusing on whether it can become a new trend.
Global luxury brands are also paying attention to genderless products.
Last month, Italian luxury brand FENDI introduced men’s crop tops while unveiling the 2022 S/S (Spring/Summer) men’s collection.
The male models on the runway that day wore short-length tops that revealed the waistline.
Silvia Venturini, creative director of Fendi, said about Fendi’s S/S 2022 collection, “This time, I felt that I wanted to give men freedom.”
Italian luxury brand PRADA also introduced men’s miniskirts, the so-called ‘skort,’ in the men’s spring/summer 2022 collection last month.
According to the American fashion magazine Vogue, the word ‘skort’ is a combination of shorts, which are short pants, and a skirt.
In the Prada collection, male models appeared in ‘skort’ that revealed the leg line. The ‘Skort’ with short pants and a skirt on the outside look like a mini skirt.
In the Prada collection, male models also wore skirts and open-shouldered knitted backs.
This genderless fashion wind also blew into the fashion of male idols.
Costumes such as crop tops and skirt pants are becoming a fashion item for male idols as well as female idols. EXO’s Kai even stood on stage wearing a crop top that revealed his belly button three years ago. Also, last year, the group TXT (Tomorrow x Together) became a hot topic in a music video with members wearing crop tops. ASTRO’s Moonbin and Sanha also wore crop top outfits that showed off their waists. As such, they received a great response.
Also, Jimin of the group BTS showed off a genderless fashion by wearing a skirt over short pants last month.
However, as it is still unfamiliar fashion, there are some disputes surrounding men wearing a crop top.
Kim, 29, an office worker, said, “It is said that wearing clothes is freedom. But, if you tell me to wear it, I don’t think I’ll be able to try it willingly.”
One netizen shared a photo of men’s crop top fashion. He said, “Even if the line between men and women is blurring, it seems too far gone.”
Lee (25), who is usually interested in fashion, said, “I want to create a social atmosphere where people can freely wear whatever they wear, male or female.”
